 Art 1 (V100)   

Prerequisite: None 

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement

Your creative journey starts here! Learn to draw and see like an artist, shading, faces, paint, conquer oil pastels and discover the fun of printmaking. As you learn about and put to use the language of art, you will gain confidence in yourself and build a shared artistic community with your peers. Art 1 will teach you how to become the skilled, creative person you have always hoped to be.


Art 2 (V110)   

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Art 1 or teacher recommendation 

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement      

Art 2 is the next stop in your art journey! You already know the language of art, now let's expand your style.  You will explore and create artwork in the styles of various western art movements using a range of media like acrylic paint, charcoal, graphite, and Prismacolor Pencils.


Figurative Drawing and Design 1 (V125)   

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Art 1

Course does NOT meet a UC/CSU A-G requirement 

What to do with all this new artistic skill...hum...Take FDD1, of course! Not only will you get a chance to practice drawing people, your imagination will be sparked with projects designed to get you thinking. What does it take to go from “I have no idea” to “let me show you my great idea”? FDD1 will guide you and your design team through the whole creative process.


3D Design/Sculpture (V138)   

Prerequisite: None

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement     

This introductory course in 3 dimensional design and sculpture covers the fundamentals of art through working with wire, plaster, cardboard, paper-mache and other sculpting mediums. Students will learn to design and create 3 dimensional sculptures from sketch to project completion. California state standards are addressed. This course is equal to Art 1 in graduation credit.


Studio Art (V120)   

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Art 2 or teacher recommendation

Enjoy working as an artist and expect to be challenged in this class. You will explore relevant topics and new approaches with your own unique perspective and creative thinking. As stepping stone to building a AP 2D Design portfolio, Studio Art supports the highly motivated student in reaching their artistic goals.


AP Studio Art: 2D Design (V133)

Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation 

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement

AP 2D Design is not for wimps! In this class you will finish the work needed to assemble both the AP Breadth and Sustained Study portfolios, producing artwork both in class and at home. As an artist community, you will share ideas and participate in peer critiques. Exploration, hard work and personal growth will be the “shining star” for you in this very challenging AP course.


Beginning Choir (V200)   

Prerequisite: None 

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement       

Anyone and everyone can learn to sing. No matter your age, experience, or perceived ability level, it is certain that you have within you the potential to be a singer. Whether you are interested in becoming a soloist or you prefer to sing with others in a safe and encouraging space, this is the perfect place for female voices to begin or continue their journey as a singer. Come and develop a lifelong skill that is sure to bring you joy and fulfillment for the rest of your life. No audition required.


Concert Choir (V210)   

Prerequisite: Audition and teacher recommendation required 

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement

The sound of the male voice is one of the most powerful vocal expressions on the planet. That is why we call ourselves “The Force”. Central to this choir is the friendship and fellowship that is forged through song. Together we work to build our voices as we engage in learning a wide variety of exciting pieces designed to unlock our potential as a vocal artists. Come and be a part of this exciting movement of male voices at MVHS, join “The Force”.  No audition required.


Advanced Choir (V215)   

Prerequisite: Audition and teacher recommendation required 

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement

This choir of mixed voices is made up of students who are passionate about making choral music at the highest level. Together we collaborate to create exquisite musical performances of a wide variety of genres. Come and be apart of a very tight knit group of singers who commit to developing as extraordinary humans and as impeccable musicians. Admittance by audition only.


Treble Ensemble (V260)   

Prerequisite: Audition and teacher recommendation required

Course does NOT meet a UC/CSU A-G requirement 

If you have a female voice, have had some past experience in choral singing, and wish to take your singing to the “next level”, this is the choir for you. Come and develop the skills needed for advanced choral literature while you cultivate meaningful and lasting relationships through intensive musical collaboration. This choir consistently earns the praise and adoration from all who experience their impeccable artistry. Admittance by audition only.


Guitar 1 (V460)  

Prerequisite: None

Meets the UC/CSU "F" requirement

Guitar 1 is an elective course designed to get you not only playing the guitar, but learning your way around the guitar and picking up valuable music knowledge along the way.  Whether you enjoy singing, have experience playing and performing guitar, have never played music before, or have prior experience on another instrument, learning the guitar will be challenging and fun.  If you enjoy listening to music and making connections, or are looking for a fun way to express yourself, guitar is the perfect instrument for you.  You will have numerous possibilities as a guitarist, including being a soloist, playing in an ensemble, or starting your own band.  The course will encompass techniques, styles, and genres of music including but not limited to rock ‘n’ roll, jazz, classical, funk, indie rock, and folk-style music with finger-picking.  “Tap” into your potential, “hammer-on” the knowledge, and “pull-off” things you never knew you could do!  A class set of guitars and amps are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own guitar!


Steel Drum Ensemble 1 (V469) or (V470)

Prerequisite: None 

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement 

Do you want to play in an ensemble with a unique instrument?  Join us in Steel Drum 1 and learn the steel pans from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago!  This class is for any student who is new to music or has never played the steel drum.  Play music, learn a fun instrument, and connect with new friends.  You will become a performer that creates music larger than yourself and plays to enthusiastic audiences. We work and play hard as we learn and apply music theory and complete weekly practice logs, in addition to our after school rehearsals and evening concerts.  Jump in and be a part of the MVHS steel pan community!


Steel Drum Ensemble 2 (V471)   

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Steel Drum Ensemble 1 or Teacher Approval 

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement

If you love the MVHS Steel Drum community and want to continue making music with your friends, audition for this ensemble.  This class is for any student who loves a challenge and wants to learn a higher level of music theory and play fantastic music, while arranging favorite pieces for our concerts.  The group loves traveling and performing off-campus to share our talents with larger audiences, so take a leap and audition for this group and become a part of our MVHS steel pan family!


Music Composition Technology 1 (V545)   

Prerequisite: None 

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement

Do you find yourself humming a new tune or is listening to your favorite music something you love to do?  If you answered ‘yes’ to either questions, Music Composition is you!  Come discover your inner composer as you learn how to create music on a computer.  In this class you’ll improvise and create music that you can share with your friends and family, as well as, learn how to read and  write music, and how to read, write, and talk about music.   Make music every day and become your own favorite composer!


Music Composition Technology 2 (V546)   

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Music Composition 1 or teacher recommendation 

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement

From group composition projects, to learning about harmony and how it fits in with your own unique melodies - this class will take you deeper into your own pieces while expanding your music theory and skills as a composer.  Create your music and find its place in your everyday life!


Music Composition Technology 3 (V547)   

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Music Composition 2 or teacher recommendation.

Course does NOT meet a UC/CSU A-G requirement 

Create a film score, discover minimalism, connect visual art to music, and refine your skills as a composer. This is the most creative music composition class that will help you create your best pieces yet!  Music Comp 3 is your musical creative bridge to becoming a professional composer - come and get lost in your own music and share it with the world!


Drama 1 (V350)   

Prerequisite: None 

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement

Find yourself and your character in Drama 1.  Develop your ability to express yourself through voice and movement exercises.  Learn about theatre history and improvisation, perform monologues and scenes, and gain self confidence in this fast paced and active class.


Drama 2 (V355)   

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Drama 1 or teacher recommendation 

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement      

Deepen your understanding of character creation and analysis in Drama 2.  Think on your feet and explore both comedy and drama.  From radio plays to children’s theatre to Shakespeare, Drama 2 will provide opportunities to create, explore, and be a part of our theatre family.


Drama 3 (V360)   

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Drama 2 or teacher recommendation 

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement      

Love Drama?  Analyze classic plays and engage in the process of transforming yourself into different characters of many periods. Expand your knowledge of world theatre at the same time you are developing your instrument; special focus on creating original work as well as honing audition skills and presentation.


Drama 4 (V364)   

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Drama 3 or teacher approval 

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement

Take a deep dive into drama -- in Drama 4 your will discover how important theatre practitioners have evolved and created new methods for reflecting and sharing essential human concerns.  Through devised theatre work and classic plays, this class becomes a true ensemble of theatre artists:  directors and performers.


Musical Theater Ensemble (V230)   

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Drama 1 or teacher recommendation

Spend your Spring in the spotlight!  Unlock your talent and put it all together; singing, dancing and acting.  Musical Theatre is a class for students of a broad range of experience--explore the nuts and bolts of telling a story through song, interpreting character through movement and dance, and committing to a most memorable experience!

 

MTE will help you improve your musical chops, culminating in a staged musical performance at the end of the term.


Dance 1 (V300)   

Prerequisite: None 

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement

New to dance? Welcome! We will be  learning about movement biomechanics, anatomy, safe practices, and coordination, and all basic fundamentals of dance. Sequentially, studies in Jazz, Contemporary, and Hip-hop dance are all-encompassing as students will understand and articulate each style fully in distinction, history and origin, stylistic evolution, and technique. Dance improvisation and choreographic principles will be studied and applied throughout the term. At the conclusion of this course, dancers will have an understanding of what dance means to them,  a firm understanding of the body, safe practices, dance history, dance identification, movement analysis, and reflection.


Dance 2 (V305)   

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Dance 1 or Audition 

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement

Dance 2 segues directly from all principles learned in Dance 1 to refine and strengthen basic technical skills in each dance style. As the class progresses, dancers will build on more complex movement and sequences. This course focuses in depth on movement biomechanics, anatomy, safe practices, and coordination, and intermediate levels of technique. The primary focus of study remains in Jazz, Contemporary, and Hip-hop dance. Articulation of each style in distinction is elevated, history and origin of each style is re-traced, stylistic evolution in performance is explored, and technique is heightened in all movements of study. Movements have increased complexity and are practiced in detail. All unit dances will demonstrate increased coordination, connectedness, and efficiency. Dancers will begin to lead their interpretation of each dance into their performance. Dance improvisation will be utilized more often and improved upon each unit of study.


Dance 3 (V310)   

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Dance 2 or Audition 

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement

Dance 3 focuses on refinement of technique in all complex movement skills. Complex/difficult technical movements are practiced and mastered. The class will move quickly through each unit of study and choreography will be begin to be processed and grasped quickly. Units of study include Jazz, Contemporary, Hip-hop, Lyrical, Modern, Ballet, Dance Improvisation, and Choreography. History and origin of each style is re-traced and related to what is currently in process, stylistic evolution in performance is proficient, and technique is heightened in all complex movements. Details of performance and technique are expected to be absorbed and performed. All unit dances will contain complex coordination situations, and dancers will be expected to develop advanced connectedness and efficiency in learning large quantities of choreography at a quick pace. Dance improvisation will be strengthened and interpretation of dance expanded.  


Dance 4 (V315)   

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Dance 3 or Audition 

Meets the UC/CSU “F” requirement

Dance 4 focuses on perfection of technique and all performance aspects including artistic purpose and expression. Complex/difficult technical movements are practiced and taken to new levels of advancement in articulation. The class will move quickly through each unit of study and choreography be processed and grasped quickly. Units of study include Jazz, Contemporary, Hip-hop, Lyrical, Modern, Ballet, Dance Improvisation, and Choreography. History and origin of each style is re-traced and applied during the study of various dance forms. Dancers will be expected to develop advanced connectedness and efficiency in learning large quantities of choreography at a quick pace. Augmented interpretation of each dance will be processed into performance. Dance improvisation will be at performance level.


AP Art History  (V130)   

Grade Level: 11-12

Prerequisite: 

Pending Approval for UC/CSU “F” requirement

This introductory college level class will provide students with an understanding of architecture, sculpture and painting within diverse historical periods and cultures, from Pre-history to Postmodernism and non-western art. Instruction, in a chronological sequence, will introduce the ideas that prompted great artists to create masterworks of art. 


3-D Design/Sculpture 2 (V139)   

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: Successful completion of 3- D Design/Sculpture 1

Pending Approval for UC/CSU “F” requirement

3-Ddesign /Sculpture 2 is for the second year student interested in improving their artistic and creative abilities. Students will expand and grow their sculpting and design abilities, build upon standards, principles and elements beyond the beginning levels in specified mediums such as clay, mosaic, wood and mixed media. This course may be taken for an additional year.
