Dear Mission Vista High School Families,

Mission Vista High School, like many schools in North County, now requires all student drivers wanting to park on campus to complete the Start Smart driver's safety program, which is hosted by the California Highway Patrol. Students, along with one parent/guardian must attend and complete the program in order to obtain a school parking permit. Students who attended the course last year are not required to attend again this year.

The Start Smart program is a free two-hour course that provides teen drivers and their parents with an opportunity to clearly understand their responsibilities when a teen starts to drive. Taught by trained law enforcement personnel, it creates awareness of possible consequences, both financial and physical, of distracted or impaired driving and provides applicable information about collision prevention. The class also clarifies the restrictions of the Provisional License Law and touches on social host ordinances. The program represents a concerted effort intended to reduce the risks associated with teen driving. Additional information can be found by clicking here.

Mission Vista High School will host 2 Start Smart sessions this year:

  • Oct. 16, 2019.  6:00-8:00 p.m. in the theater
  • January 29, 2020.  6:00-8:00 p.m. in the theater

Any 10th-12th-grade student who has recently obtained his/her driver's license, or will earn it during the school year is encouraged to attend. Students who will be receiving their license over the summer are also welcome to attend and will be eligible to purchase a parking permit next year upon completion of this session.

There is no need to register in advance for the Start Smart course. Students who are 18 years of age at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year are not required to be accompanied by a parent/guardian to the course. Upon program completion, students will be eligible to purchase their MVHS parking permit. Students may also attend the Start Smart programs hosted at other area high schools if the dates above conflict with other commitments. They may present their certificate of completion to the Finance Office and purchase a parking permit at that time. Dates and locations for Start Smart presentations at other high schools can be found by clicking here.

If you have additional questions, please contact the school.
